About Us
Northwest Youth Eye Care is dedicated to educating children and their parents about good eye care habits, demystifying myopia, and common treatment options.
Humble Beginnings
In spring of 2023, a high-school sophomore named Ethan Knapp created both a simple 1-page eye-health questionnaire, and a club named the Westview Eye Research. By summer 2024 the group grew to 5 members, and they began collecting information about neighborhood children's eye care habits, plus treatments commonly used to control myopia.
Northwest Youth Eye Care (NPO)
Later, in Fall 2024, when Ethan became a junior, he created an NPO and a homepage to provide more parents and children in the Portland West Side area with information about:
- Basic structure of the eye
. What is Near-Sightedness and how do children develop it?
- What personal habits can help prevent and control near-sightedness?
- What treatments are available to slow the progression of near-sightedness?
- What are the dangers of high-myopia in the future?
Ethan's Vision
Ethan hopes he can not only increase the number of events he hosts to promote children's eye health and myopia prevention, but also that his brother Ian will carry on this same work after Ethan enters college in fall of 2026.
